Whole-house renovation
Slate Yard
A former slate merchant's house taken back to shell and rebuilt around a new top-lit stair.
The plan had been subdivided so many times that no room related to any other. We took it back to the structure, put a single new stair at the centre of the house and let the rooms hang off that.
Every window was replaced with slim double-glazed units in the original openings, which needed conservation officer sign-off on a sample before the rest could follow. Getting that sample right first time saved about five weeks.
The stair is the whole project in one element: cantilevered stone treads, a rooflight directly above, and nothing else in the space.
